What We Do

Sunday Creek Horizons is a full-service firm that provides issue advocacy and strategic communication, real estate development, and business development services to a broad range of clients -- with a particular focus on Appalachian communities and causes.

Our firm was formed with a simple, clear mission: to improve the lives of Appalachian Ohioans. We strongly believe in the boundless potential of our region, and believe that Appalachian communities deserve a seat at the table when resources are allocated in the halls of power. As our firm grows, so does our commitment to social impact investment and authentic engagement.

Sunday Creek Horizons was engaged in March 2021 to assist ORCA in advocating for over $2 million to complete a full build-out of the Bailey’s Trail System, which, when fully developed, will be the largest mountain biking trail east of the Mississippi.

Washington County Commission

Sunday Creek became aware of the outrageous cost ($15 million) of the Devola sewer project in Washington County, and immediately began looking for ways to help. The County Commissioners have partnered with Sunday Creek to bring together stakeholders, approach state and federal funding sources, and place stories to highlight the unjust burden this project is placing on the community.

Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies

Sunday Creek Horizons has worked with OACCA since 2019, and proudly provides advocacy services in Washington and in Columbus to advance the interests of low-income Ohioans among key decision makers. In 2021, we were instrumental in securing over $500 million in rental assistance monies from the U.S. Department of the Treasury for OACCA to administer.

2020 U.S. Census

The 2020 Census was undertaken during a year of historic disruption to the status quo. Recognizing Appalachian Ohio might be significantly undercounted, amidst the disrupting of the pandemic, Sunday Creek Horizons created a first-of-its-kind complete count effort to encourage online responses to the 2020 Census.

Eastern Gateway Community College

Sunday Creek Horizons advances Eastern Gateway Community College's priorities through strategic advocacy in Washington and through strategic communication in the State.

Members of the Appalachian Funders Network

Sunday Creek planned and executed an Appalachian Broadband Townhall that included members of Congress and their staffs, to hear directly from Central Appalachian leaders about how the federal infrastructure package needs to address broadband buildout in our region. Sunday Creek turned out a strong contingent of lawmakers and their staffs from several states, and created an agenda to present targeted materials to key decision makers.

City of Athens

As remote work becomes more popular and allowed by employers nationwide, remote workers are spending significant time researching the right community where they can be happy workers and residents with their families. Sunday Creek Horizons has been engaged by the City of Athens to help finance the renovation of the historic Armory Building on Court Street, and to create a nonprofit to advocate for and attract remote workers to Athens.

Real Estate Development Clients

Opportunity Appalachia

In 2020, Sunday Creek Horizons responded to a request for proposals to work with Appalachian Ohio communities in the development of opportunity zone investment projects. In the ensuing months, our team has worked with four communities to assemble “shovel ready” projects focused on downtown revitalization and job retention. Today, we are continuing to press forward on multiple real estate development projects.

Woda Cooper Companies

Jeff Woda and Zack Space are both from and share a love for Eastern Ohio. Those common interests led to a friendship and partnership that had spanned a decade, helping to bring thousands of affordable workforce housing units to central Ohio. Now, Sunday Creek has partnered with Woda Cooper Companies to help communities in Appalachian Ohio leverage their American Rescue Plan monies to build safe, clean, new and fixed-rent workforce housing throughout Appalachian communities.

AHEPA

Sunday Creek was engaged to assist AHEPA in identifying a pathway to enter the affordable assisted living facility (AALF) market in Ohio. Low Medicaid reimbursement rates have historically prevented the creation of AALFs in Ohio and Michigan.
